Exploring the future of what IBM Cloud could be.

What if_ is a design program I co-created with my manager to explore the future experiences of IBM Cloud. Bringing together over 200 IBMers, we created a north star for the future of IBM Cloud. Pushing innovation for customers and using storytelling to inspire.

"Imagination feeds exploration, you have to imagine the possible before you can go and do it."
James Cameron

The goal of the What if_ program was to capture and explore diverse ideas to provide guideposts that help push and shape IBM Cloud into a market leading cloud platform.

The idea was born from my manager and I exploring the future of IBM Kubernetes, through a project called Mutiny.

Mutiny

Mutiny started with simples questions: What if you could follow kubernetes resources, or, What if you could work in a collaborative terminal? To answer these questions, we began prototyping and exploring how we could make these ideas a reality.

Capturing the ideas

To capture the ideas, we kicked off a 3 day long Design Jam. Over 200 IBMers came together to share their ideas and vote on the best ones. Behind the scenes, the team and I started grouping the ideas into what we called "emerging themes".

Conclusion

In the end, we were able to create a north star vision for IBM Cloud and establish a new way of working for IBM Cloud. From the internal website I built, teams could submit ideas, contribute to others, and monitor the progress of ideas to launch.

These emerging themes were then used as the basis to create a north star vision for IBM Cloud through an effort we called Voltron. Where I laied the ground work for the next gen design and layout of cloud.
